How do I know if I have dry eye?

woman wiping her eyes with a tissueDry Eye is one of the most common eye conditions we see here at River City Vision Center. Our patients are often surprised that dry eye is the number one reason that people visit their eye doctor. It has been estimated that between 25 million and 60 million Americans suffer from dry eye.

Most people that come into our practice with dry eye, do not even realize that they are suffering from it.

Could you be suffering from dry eye?

Do your eyes feel irritated or like something is in them? Are your eyes red? Do they burn or itch? One of the counterintuitive symptoms of dry eye is excessive tearing.

Dry eye is caused by an imbalance between the water content of your tears and an oil-like substance that is excreted by your eyelids when you blink. In a healthy eye, the oil rides on the surface of the tear water and keeps the moisture from drying up.

An imbalance of these two substances is what causes dry eye.

At River City Vision Center we will analyze the moisture in your eye and see if the imbalance is caused by a lack of the oil, or a lack of the water and recommend the proper treatment.

If you think that you may be suffering from dry eye, give us a call or make an appointment today for a dry eye evaluation.
