What Is Dry Eye?
Your eyes are supposed to be protected with a thin film of tears. When you blink, the tear film should cover the eye’s surface and offer lubrication and protection. The tear film is made from water, oil, and mucus. The oil is on the outside of the tear film, protecting the eye film from drying up too quickly. The water is the middle layer to keep the eyes clean and wash away any pollutants from the eye. The inner layer is made from mucus, and it functions to cover the entire eye surface without sticking to the eye surface.
When you suffer from dry eyes, the quality or quantity of this tear film is compromised. Either the eyes are not producing enough tears, or the tear film is being evaporated faster than it should be. With dry eyes, you might suffer from redness of the eyes, burning or stinging sensation in the eyes, itchy or swollen eyes, tired eyes, or have issues with vision. If you wear contact lenses, you might suffer from discomfort if you have dry eyes. Dry eye can be caused by environmental conditions, medications, certain types of illness, stress, not enough sleep, and other factors.
How Are Dry Eyes Treated?
At River City Vision Center, we will diagnose and treat dry eyes. Our optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye exam to check the overall health of your eyes and vision. This eye exam will check several aspects of eye and vision health, and it will help our optometrist determine the cause of dry eye. In mild cases of dry eye, our eye doctor will prescribe eye drops that will help lubricate your eyes. We might also suggest certain lifestyle changes or to change certain medications that you are taking to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. We can also provide creams, ointments, and medications to increase tear production. In more severe cases, you may need tear duct plugs to alleviate your symptoms.
